Clean the Gulf

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill is a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that is the largest offshore spill in U.S. history. Hundreds of millions of gallons were spilled following an April 20, 2010 explosion, creating an oil slick about 2,500 square miles.

The spill threatens environmental disaster due to factors like petroleum toxicity and oxygen depletion. Eight U.S. national parks are threatened, more than 400 species are at risk, and thousands of animals have already been killed.

The Nature Conservancy has been working in the Gulf of Mexico for more than four decades. They are working to shore up, protect and restore the places that are important for replenishing Gulf Coast fisheries and supporting Gulf Coast communities and livelihoods, including:

  • coastal bays and marshes,
  • coastal rivers and forests,
  • mangroves,
  • seagrass beds, and
  • oyster reefs.

Feed the Hungry

In many ways, America is the land of plenty. But for 1 in 6 Americans, hunger is a reality. Many people believe that the problems associated with hunger are confined to small pockets of society, certain areas of the country, or certain neighborhoods, but the reality is much different:

  • In 2008, 39.8 million people (13.2 percent) were in poverty.
  • In 2008, 49.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households (32.4 million adults and 16.7 million children).

Feeding America is the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity.  Their mission is to feed America’s hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and engage our country in the fight to end hunger.

Each year, the Feeding America network provides food to more than 37 million low-income people facing hunger in the United States, including more than 14 million children and nearly 3 million seniors. This means more than 2.5 billion pounds of food and grocery products annually.
